Universidade do Minho – Braga -Department of Production and Systems Engineering

: Higher Education - University
Syze :The University of Minho (www.uminho.pt) is a public university with both administrative and financial autonomy. Founded in 1973, it began its academic activities in 1975/76. It is known as one of the “New Universities”, which revolutionised higher education in Portugal. Although the University of Minho is still very young, it has already earned an excellent reputation as an institution of research and learning. The University of Minho is one of the largest universities in Portugal, with over 16,000 students, nearly 1,100 lecturers, and almost 600 administrative staff members.

Department of Production and Systems Engineering (DPS)
The Department (see www.dps.uminho.pt) is responsible for coordinating a five year undergraduate course in "Management and Industrial Engineering" and jointly responsible for other undergraduate courses in science and engineering, such as the courses in "Systems Engineering and Informatics" and "Operations Research and Statistics".
At the post-graduate level, it is responsible for Master of Science degrees in Industrial Engineering and in Human Engineering and Ergonomics.
The main subject areas taught are: Human Engineering and Ergonomics, Optimization and Operations Research, Industrial Management and Organisation, Numerical and Statistical Methods, and Economic Engineering.
The academic staff consists of 50 full time members, 37 of whom hold a PhD. degree and 13 an MSc. or equivalent. The main research interests cover the topics listed above.
Competences: Prof. J. Valerio de Carvalho is head of the “Optimization and Operations Research” group. This group has 15 members, of whom 12 are PhDs. The main lines of research of this group are: cutting and packing, scheduling problems, routing problems, stock management, forecasting, logistics and simulation.
Within this group, in the area of cutting and packing and large scale integer programming, Prof. J. Valerio de Carvalho has headed or heads Projects POSI/ 1999/ SRI/ 35568 (Algorithms for Large Scale Integer Programming), POSI/ SRI/ 48873/ 2002 (Application of Branch-and-Price Algorithms in Scheduling) and POSI/ EIA/ 57203/ 2004 (Models, algorithms and tools for large scale integer optimization), funded by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), the Portuguese National Science Foundation. As a result of these projects, 4 PhD degrees were awarded, and ten articles and four conference proceedings, related with mathematical models for cutting and packing problems and machine scheduling problems, as well as original methods for their exact and heuristic solutions, were published.

J.M. Valério de Carvalho received his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Production and Operations Research from the University of Minho in 1991. He is Full Professor in the Department of Production and Systems Engineering of the University of Minho. He is also a member of the Algoritmi Research Center. His main research interests include large scale integer programming, and cutting and packing problems. He has published in Operations Research, INFORMS Journal on Computing, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, Computational Optimization and Applications, INFOR - Information Systems and Operational Research and International Transactions in Operational Research.

Research personnel : 3 professors and researchers in Operations Research, 1 assistant researcher, 1 research fellow, 1 PhD student, 2 technical and administrative personnel.
